Abstract:
Solvation plays an essential role in chemistry and biological processes. Probing the molecular details of solvation has been a challenge in physical chemistry since measurements on bulk solutions typical produce only average quantities. Hydrated ionic clusters, with a solute ion surrounded by a few water molecules, have provided a special way to meet this challenge. They are produced and measured in the gas phase, and their solvation environment can be controlled by the number of water molecules. Using infrared multiphoton dissociation spectrometry (IRMPD), it is now possible to probe their vibrational modes. Recent works in our group have shown that the dynamic fluctuation of the hydrogen bonds is a key factor to understand these spectra.
